Descending Delta flight from a cold, snowy Boston to a nice warm Mobile, Al. in February 2015. I enjoy flying. Just wanted to share the view with those who haven't had the opportunity. Looking down on the clouds is always a joy.
4. First Avelo Airlines flight departs from Mobile International Airport
On May 31, Avelo Airlines took its inaugural flight from the Mobile International Airport.
Mobilians were out in force to welcome this new low-cost, high-value carrier to our community and to take advantage of some great introductory airfares. Mobile is Avelo’s first operating location on the Northern Gulf Coast, and its first flight Wednesday was a milestone for the Mobile Airport Authority.
This was the first commercial passenger flight out of downtown Mobile since 2020, but it won’t be the last. The leadership of MAA is working hard to bring in a variety of additional carriers as work on the new passenger terminal at the Mobile International Airport continues. With so much going on, there’s never been a better time to fly out of Mobile, Alabama!

7. Delta comes to Mobile to pick up keys to its 50th A220 jet
A big 2016 order from Delta was a key step forward for Airbus’ A220 family of jets and the company’s plan to assemble them in Alabama -- and on Wednesday, Delta staff came to Mobile to pick up the airline’s 50th A220 jet.“A Golden Delivery!” Airbus said in a Facebook post. “This is one BIG 50th to celebrate! Kinda seems like yesterday when we delivered the first Delta Air Lines A220 (in October 2018) – and today we delivered their 50th #A220 from our U. S. Manufacturing Facility in Alabama! A team from Delta joined our folks in Mobile today just for the occasion!”To be clear, not all 50 of those jets were produced at the Alabama facility. It may seem like ancient history now, but for a while the jet -- and the proposed Final Assembly Line in Mobile -- were at the center of an international trade dispute. Bombardier had developed a new family of jets known as the C-Series, that had state-of-the-art technology and good market prospects. But developing the program had exhausted the company. When Delta ordered 75 of them in 2016, Boeing filed a trade complaint alleging that Canada’s support of the program amounted to an unfair subsidy. A preliminary ruling went in Boeing’s favor. In October 2017 Airbus announced that it was buying into the Bombardier program, making it a joint venture with Airbus as the majority stakeholder. The idea was that Airbus had the marketing and support muscle to carry forward the program Bombardier had birthed. Airbus also said it planned to add a new assembly line alongside the one in Mobile where it already assembled larger A320-family jets. The trade battle raged on, with Boeing lawyers criticizing the new Airbus plant as a ruse to get around tariffs that might apply to Canada-built jets. Bombardier ultimately won a key ruling in January 2018. The Bombardier C-Series became the Airbus A220, the assembly line was built and in June 2020 the first Alabama-built A220 made its maiden flight. By that point, Delta already had begun taking delivery of A220s built on Bombardier’s original line in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada. Its fleet of 50 is a mix of jets from the two assembly lines. An Airbus spokesman said Wednesday that the current rate of production is around four A220s per month from the Canadian line and one per month from the new Alabama line. Projections call for the production rate in Mobile to increase to around two per month by early next year. As previously announced, Airbus foresees substantial growth and expects to be putting out 14 A220s a month by mid-decade. That projection breaks down into 10 jets per month from Mirabel and four per month from Mobile.

This was the first leg of our journey from Huntsville, Alabama to Miami, Florida four our seven day Eastern Caribbean Cruise! The flight was aboard a now retired Delta MD-88. Every thing about the flight was great! Delta continues its stellar customer service and on time arrivals that it has grown a name for. Sadly, this would be the second to last flight that I will ever fly on a MD-88. The Mad Dog will be missed.
